Watched 'Astu - So be it' based on review from two of my friends.
Verdict: Highly recommended.
What a poetic movie. understated but brilliant acting through out. music that just complements. the usage of sanskrit poems, the dialogues and the role played by the mahout's wife. was the elephant a metaphor for her generosity ?
A friend made an interesting observation about the use of elephant in a movie on memory loss . Not sure if any thing else would have held our attention like an elephant . Human beings and to a greater extent , kids have always been fascinated by elephants.
Also the contrast in the size of the house of the more educated and the mahout’s and the ( inversely proportional ) willingness to accept appa ( now a kid ) into their family. very well brought out by the most recent mother, and her acceptance of Appa into her fold . All very well done .
With lots of nothing (nothing preachy, nothing too sentimental, nothing cinematic, nothing in your face ) the movie manages to impress you.
The movie does exactly what good stories do. Not answer all queries and let the reader come to his/her own conclusions and in the process make the more discerning more involved .
Will watch it again. Thanks a lot for the recommendation
Note: I watched it on Amazon Prime using english subtitles. my marathi knowledge ( whatever it was ) is now limited to a few words
